PRINCE2 (Projects in Controlled Environments) is an internationally recognised and widely used project management methodology. It was developed with contributions from more than 150 companies with extensive project management experience and has become the most widely used project management methodology in Europe.
PRINCE2 is built on seven principles, comprises seven processes and describes seven themes. Because PRINCE2 can, and indeed must, be tailored to the project's environment, it is essential to understand the principles that form the backbone of the methodology.
Documents can be combined, simplified or omitted. Processes can be significantly simplified, and each offers different ways of being applied depending on the size of the project. The principles remain unchanged, however, ensuring that the project is a PRINCE2 project: a project in a controlled environment.
Another key strength of PRINCE2 is the guidance it provides not only for processes but also for documents. While allowing room for tailoring, PRINCE2 guides the project manager through all key activities, from the project mandate that initiates the project to project closure approval by the project board.
